The 2024 National SimWars Competition will be hosted by the Emergency Medicine Society at University College Dublin (UCD) and will take place on Saturday, 2nd March in the Health Sciences Centre at UCD in Belfield.
This all-Ireland contest will feature participants from the seven universities on the island with over 100 medical and nursing students taking part. The judging panel this year will include 30 healthcare providers across a range of disciplines including Consultants and Senior Trainees in Emergency Medicine as well as nursing, pre-hospital personnel and other healthcare educators. One such judge, Dr John Cronin, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, noted, ‘I am very proud and excited to be judging on SimWars again in 2024. SimWars showcases the incredible talent and enthusiasm of medical and nursing students and their appetite for Emergency Medicine. SimWars plays a key role in their development and has teamwork and patient safety at its core.’
SimWars is an intervarsity simulation resuscitation competition involving medical and nursing students and was created in 2017 by Dr James Condren and Dr Tiarnán Byrne when they were final-year medical students at UCD. Both are now trainees on the National Emergency Medicine Training Programme with Dr Condren a Specialist Registrar and Dr Byrne a Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine. Clinical assessment and management of simulated patients who require resuscitation in addition to communication, teamwork and leadership are all evaluated. Interest and participation in SimWars has progressively increased year-on-year since its inception and the Association is committed to continue to support this innovative and exciting competition on an ongoing basis.
IAEM is delighted that SimWars continues to evolve and generate interest in the wider Emergency Medicine community. The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Association, as a regular part of its programme, now features a SimWars competition for qualified doctors and nurses.
