The inaugural members of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine were the United Kingdom, United States of America, Australasia (Australia and New Zealand) and Canada. The four representative organisations for Emergency Medicine in these jurisdictions have had close links to both Irish Emergency Medicine and Irish trainees and specialists in Emergency Medicine over many years. As a full member of IFEM since 1991, IAEM regards the four founding members of IFEM as important sister organisations.

IAEM is a member of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) and the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM).
